This paper presents a design framework called Gameful Digital Rhetoric that offers a set of design frames for designing meaningful digital rhetoric that guides collective human behavior in ubiquitous social digital services, such as crowdsourcing. The framework is extracted from our experiences with building and developing crowdsourcing case studies. From a video game perspective, the paper has categorized our experiences into seven design frames to encourage collective human activity. This approach is different from traditional gamification, as it focuses more on the semiotic aspect of virtuality in the video games, not game mechanics; it helps to enhance the current meaning of the real world for changing human attitude and behavior through various socio-cultural and psychological techniques. Therefore, it is possible to discuss respective design frames for enhancing crowdsourcing by incrementally adding new digital rhetoric. The paper also presents how Gameful Digital Rhetoric allows us to guide collective human behavior in Collectivist Crowdsourcing; the design is explained through a scenario-based and experiment-based analyses. The paper then discusses how to design collective human behavior with Gameful Digital Rhetoric and how to identify the design’s potential pitfalls. Our approach offers useful insights into the design of future social digital services that influence collective human behavior. © 2016, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

© 2016, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

We are now living in smart cities, where information technologies enhance our everyday life. For example, our energy management and traffic management have become smarter, making our daily lives more convenient and efficient. However, from a citizen's point of view, a person's happiness needs to be more important than achieving efficient and convenient smart city infrastructures. This is, in particular, an essential issue for achieving humancentered smart city design. In this paper, we present our methodology to gamify smart city services. Our methodology consists of three tools, one model and two infrastructures. The tools contain the value-based design framework, the personality-based analysis framework, and the reality-based analysis framework. The model is named the GamiMedia model, and the infrastructures include the Virtual Form infrastructure and the Digital-Physical Hybrid Role- Playing infrastructure. The methodology to gamify smart city services is extracted from our long experiences with building applications services and middleware infrastructures for ubiquitous computing environments. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

© 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Good design strategies for designing social media are important for their success, but current designs are usually ad-hoc, relying on human intuition. In this paper, we present an overview of three community-based mobile crowdsourcing services that we have developed as case studies. In community-based mobile crowdsourcing services, people voluntarily contribute to help other people anytime and anywhere using mobile phones. The task required is usually trivial, so people can perform it with a minimum effort and low cognitive load. This approach is different from traditional ones because service architecture designers need to consider the tradeoff among several types of incentives when designing a basic architecture. We then extract six insights from our experiences to show that motivating people is the most important factor in designing mobile crowdsourcing service architecture. The design strategies of community-based mobile crowdsourcing services explicitly consider the tradeoff among multiple incentives. This is significantly different from the design in traditional crowdsourcing services because their designers usually consider only a few incentives when designing respective social media. The insights are valuable lessons learned while designing and operating the case studies and are essential to successful design strategies for building future more complex crowdsourcing services. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

© 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

The virtual forms present dynamically generated visual images containing information that influences a users behavior and thinking. In a typical way, adding a display to show visual expressions or projecting some information on an artifact offers computational visual forms on the existing daily artifacts. Using virtual forms is a very promising way to enhance artifacts surrounding us, and to make our daily life and business richer and more enjoyable. We believe that incorporating fictional stories into virtual forms offers a new possibility for enriching user experiences. In particular, integrating fictional stories into our daily activities through transmedia storytelling is a promising approach. Transmedia storytelling enables virtual forms to be employed everywhere to immersively integrate fictional stories into our daily activities. If we can design attractive virtual forms in a structured way, it will become easy to enrich user experiences. Currently, the design framework for virtual forms is not well defined. The framework needs to take into account the semiotic aspect of a virtual form. One key factor, in particular, is how strongly we believe in the reality of a fictional story within the virtual form. In this paper, we show the extracted insights discussed in the workshops and present some design implications for designing virtual forms that integrate fictional stories into our daily activities. © Springer International Publishing 2013.

© Springer International Publishing 2013.
